Sydney City Signal - 20th July 2016

Sydney City Signal

Happy new year! The new Sydney City Rotaract year that is, led by our President Kim Ruth and Vice-President Maryanne Green. Keep an eye on your inbox on the second and third week of each month for the latest edition of The Signal. It’ll be full of the next fortnight of events, recaps and fun facts. Over the last few weeks our Rotaractors got quizzical at the Burwood Trivia Night – shout out to member Gus McBride who is now President of Burwood Rotaract. We found out “who you gonna call” with a movie get-together to see Ghostbusters. Plus we visited our district's beautiful Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) patient at Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation. We also had a spectacular turnout to our first meeting back and members had the chance to choose a pillar to focus their volunteering efforts; community, professional development, international and/or social.

SCR in the Picture

My name is... Kim Ruth
I joined Rotaract in... March 2012
My role is... President
Something about me that might surprise you is… Despite being an American, I have never had a McDonald’s burger. Is that surprising?
I am originally from... Eastchester, New York. 20 minutes north of Manhattan
On a weekend you’ll find me… brunching, exploring, traveling, camping with the Girl Guides, theatre, movies, Rotaract events, or on a lazy weekend just binge watching Netflix.
I joined Rotaract because... I love Rotary’s Motto, “Service Above Self”. I was involved in Interact when I was in high school from 2001-2005. My University did not have one unfortunately, so when I moved to an area that had a club, of course I had to join!
My favourite saying is... “Not all who wander are lost” – J.R.R Tolkien
Outside of Rotaract I work as a… Relationship Manager, at ANZ Wealth
At karaoke I would sing... If our VP Maryanne is there, a duet needs to happen, which would be Boys II Men or some R&B song from the 90s/00s. Otherwise something Disney or over the top dramatic like Celine Dion’s “It’s All Comin’ Back to Me Now”.
My pet peeve is... When people do not reply to Facebook Event invites. It is a Yes, No or Maybe. What is so difficult?
The last book I read was...I am currently reading Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s Learned by Lena Dunham. Hopefully, I can finish it on my long plane ride next week.
I am inspired by... travel & cultures. I always have to have a trip in the pipeline. You learn so much when you explore. Not only about the world, but about yourself.

Keep smiling,

Alison Dance & Rachel Fisher

Ps: did you know this Sydney City Rotaract year has a theme? It’s “welcome home” so we can create a sense of belonging right here in Sydney and celebrate all the different places our members come from.
